Medieval Conflicts
Wars were very much part and parcel of medieval life. The Middle Ages saw many battles, sieges and drawn-out conflicts. Religious confrontations also took place, in the form of theological disputes as well as major military conflicts, such as the Crusades or jihad.
High Middle Ages
The Crusades were a series of major military expeditions conducted by Christianity against Islam, focused on “liberating” the Holy Land.
Late Middle Ages
The Hundred Years’ War was one of the most protracted and devastating conflicts in Western Europe. France and England fought for over a century.
Orders and organizations
The Knights Hospitaller began with looking after the sick and injured, but soon branched out into bodyguard duty, military escorts and full-scale warfare.
The Teutonic Order built a huge monastic state in the Baltic by deploying its famous Teutonic Knights against Poland, Lithuania and the Rus’.
